The Hitavada is the English-language newspaper with the highest circulation in central India. It is also known as "The People's Paper." In 1911, freedom fighter Gopal Krishna Gokhale founded the newspaper in Nagpur. Later, its ownership was transferred to Banwarilal Purohit, who also owned Purohit and Company. Banwarilal Purohit was a former BJP MP and also served as the Governor of Tamil Nadu. The newspaper celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2011, with then-President of India, Mrs. Pratibha Patil, inaugurating the ceremony.
